Together, we are better. / Juntos, somos mejores.

It’s the new year, and so many of us have made some resolutions. Maybe you want to exercise more, eat healthier, save more money or experience new things. The resolutions that always hit home for me are about relationships. Spending more time caring for people you know as well as those you have yet to meet. This district clearly cares about relationships. I’ve only been on the job for six months, but I already feel like I am part of a family. Despite being first and second ring suburbs of a big city, it still feels like a small town. And like a small town, we quickly get to know each other and work together.

In the first half of the year, this small town has shown me over and over the value of relationships. Our school communities doesn’t simply coexist. There is true caring for each other. I see it in our students and staff as I walk the halls and eat in the cafeterias. I’ve heard it in the voices of the many community leaders I have had the privilege of meeting.

I know this is not news to anyone who has been here and I am very grateful to those who have been part of building our supportive community over the years. Nonetheless, this is something we should not take for granted. This is something that requires regular recommitment. It can be easy to be “too busy” to help someone in need, connect with a new neighbor, or look for ways to look past differences and find common goals around which we can work together. Yet, that is exactly what we need to do.

I am looking forward to the rest of my first year. I am excited about the partnerships we are building with businesses, civic organizations, non-profit organizations and individuals who want to be part of making the world a better place. I am also excited about continuing to build relationships with those I have yet to meet.

I started the year by encouraging district staff to take time to build relationships and I now extend that encouragement to the whole community. In fact, let’s take it one step further. How can we support each other, help each other achieve our goals and be the best versions of ourselves? How can we work together to achieve what we could not do alone? Let’s each find ways to not only build relationships, but create a community of support and inspiration.

Together, we are better.

Nuestras comunidades escolares no solo coexisten.

Juntos, somos mejores.
