Reflections on the First Few Days and Current Events / Reflexiones sobre los primeros días y eventos actuales

Greetings to the District 197 community,

What a great place this is to work and learn.  I can’t say it enough, this truly is a place with talented students, caring staff and a supportive community.  I have been to each school multiple times last week and this week.  Over and over, I experienced a warm environment where students and staff are energized and excited for the new year.

I saw clapping, cheering and dancing on the way into Garlough.  I saw a bald eagle soaring above the flag raising ceremony at Pilot Knob.  I saw older students acting as WEB and LINK leaders join with staff members as they welcomed new students to their school communities.  It didn’t matter which school I was in.  The excitement for the new possibilities and the new school year’s adventure was palpable everywhere.

As I am getting to know students, staff and families, I get a better picture each day of our shared hopes and dreams for the future of our schools.  In the past couple of days, I have received specific questions about events that happened over the summer and even this week, that have shown ongoing tensions in our country regarding race, immigration and gender identity, among other aspects of diversity in our nation.  Both in my current and previous experience, these types of questions have become more regular.  Community members wonder about the public school’s role in responding.

I believe that our response has and will remain consistent--and it is to offer care and support.  Our role is to ensure that all of our students and families feel safe, welcome and included in our school communities. This responsibility is the same for every student regardless of race, religion, immigration status, political affiliation, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability or socioeconomic status.  This summer’s events and Tuesday's announcement regarding the rescinding of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) does not change this responsibility.  In short, every student must know that we care about them individually and that we believe and are invested in their success.

Each time an event occurs that shakes a student or family’s sense of belonging, we will work to provide them with a network of support.  This includes everyone on our staff, be it the community liaison, the school counselor, the school principal or the classroom teacher.  In my short time here, I have already seen ample evidence of the caring network of support for our students and families.

We may not always know if students or families are feeling a lack of safety or belonging.  I encourage every student and family who is in that position, regardless of the circumstance, to reach out to their school's administrators or to any trusted adult in your school community.  We are here for you.

Thank you again for the privilege of serving as your superintendent.  I look forward to sharing my future thoughts with you in upcoming blog posts.  That said, I most value the opportunities I will have to meet you face-to-face.  If you see me at an event, please do not hesitate to come up and say hi.

I wish us all the best for this new school year.
